There’s something a bit magical about camping in the fall. While summer is often considered the prime camping season, there’s nothing like venturing into nature when the leaves are ablaze with vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow.

Every fall, we bring our kids to Starved Rock in Illinois for a camping weekend. It’s something they look forward to, and offers such a different experience than most of our summer camping trips.

You just can’t replicate the crisp air, cozy campfires and breathtaking views that fall camping has to offer.

And when we’re thinking about the campfire as our main cooking source, fall weather is perfect campfire cooking! It’s actually a pleasant experience to cook over the hot open flames in the cooler temperatures of fall.

Because cooking over the campfire just isn’t as enjoyable in the summer when I’m already covered in sweat and then trying to arrange hot coals under the dutch oven next to a sweltering campfire. Am I right?

Thankfully, the autumn season lets us enjoy the cooking and eating experience, all around the crackling campfire.
