a note from Jenny
Cinnamon rolls have become a staple on our camping trips. We don’t have them often at home, but my kids have grown to expect that they will get them when we’re camping.
Although this recipe is amazing, sometimes we just plain old rolls. Here are the four different ways we make campfire cinnamon rolls.
Ingredients

- Canola Oil Cooking Spray: It’s important to oil your cast iron prior to cooking to prevent sticking and to help build up the seasoning layer. Easily substitute a regular cooking oil and rub it over the inside of your pie iron.
- Cinnamon Rolls: Using pre-made refrigerated cinnamon rolls makes this an easy meal to pack and make while camping.
- Apples: Granny smith apples are perfect for making apple pies because they hold their shape well and have a nice texture once cooked. However, you can easily substitute other apples in this recipe and it won’t change it much.
- Brown Sugar: You can use brown sugar or white sugar interchangeably in this recipe.
- Cinnamon: Helps to season the apples and make it taste like true apple pie!
- Flour: Flour helps to thicken the sweet apple “sauce” during cooking. You can also substitute cornstarch for flour. Just use half as much cornstarch as the amount of flour that’s called for.
- Salt: A little bit of salt goes a long way in this recipe, helping to enhance the flavors and balance out the sweetness.

Equipment
Cast Iron Pie Iron (Camp Cooker): Pie irons are made of aluminum or cast iron, but I highly recommend using cast iron as they withstand much higher temperatures for longer periods of time. However, aluminum pie irons do not require seasoning and can be cleaned like all other dishes, so there are benefits to using them as well.
- Round cast iron camp cooker
- Square cast iron camp cooker
- Double cast iron camp cooker – allows you to make twice as many sandwiches with half the work prepping and cleaning!
- Aluminum pie iron camp cooker – although I don’t like the way they cook as much, they are easier to use because they don’t need to be seasoned and can be cleaned like all your other dishes.
Portable Over the Fire Cooking Grate: While cooking in hot coals or embers is ideal for cast iron pie irons, you can also cook over a fire by using a fire grill grate. It’s perfect for a wide variety of campfire pits and can easily be adapted to work at your site.
It’s also great if you just started your fire and want to get cooking right away! Simply place your pie irons on the grate and turn halfway through cooking.

1. Roll out cinnamon rolls
Spray the inside of the pie iron with cooking spray and set aside. Remove cinnamon rolls from the package and place one in between two sheets of parchment paper.
Use a rolling pin or a straight glass to roll out the dough into a circle about 5 inches wide. Place one flat cinnamon roll in the bottom of the pie iron.
2. Make apple pie filling
Peel and slice the apples, and then add them to a bowl. Sprinkle flour, cinnamon and salt on top and mix until the apples are coated.
3. Fill pie iron and close
Add about 1/3 cup of apple pie filling on top of the first cinnamon roll. Top with another rolled out cinnamon roll and pinch together the top and bottom cinnamon rolls. Close the pie iron around the apple pie.
4. Cook over campfire
There are two options when cooking with a pie iron: in the coals or over the flame. I find that cooking in the coals is faster, but sometimes can result in over cooking/burning more easily.
Cooking on a grate over the fire is usually a few minutes slower, but you have a bit more control over the temperature.

- Hot coals: Place pie iron directly in the hot coals and embers from your fire. If your fire has been going for awhile, simply pull a pile of coals a bit to the side and place the camp cooker on those hot coals.
- Over the flame: Use a grill grate to create a flat cooking surface over the fire. Place the camp cooker on the grate and let it cook.
Don’t have a cast iron camp cooker? You could also make this recipe is a larger dutch oven. Simply arrange the cinnamon rolls in a layer on the bottom and add the filling. Then, top with the remaining cinnamon rolls.
4. Enjoy!
